Changing Perspective with Thinking Guides

I was checking out some of futurelab’s projects and came across the exploratree website which provides an online library of thinking guides.  The site allows users to save work online and to even submit their own thinking guides.

This seems like a great way to get children, and adults, involved in the process of exploring and sharing other ways of thinking.  Guides have been placed in the following categories:

  • Mapping
  • Problem Solving
  • Exploring
  • Analysis
  • Different Perspectives

After filling out these thinking guides they can be printed out, emailed, or even shared with others.  The sharing feature allows groups to work on the same project by either making changes or leaving comments.

Similarities and Differences Between Cultures

Here is a lesson allowing students to create virtual “cards” that reflect their personal preferences. After making these cards they are able to browse through cards made by other students from around the world. They are able to share their cards by leaving them with students from any country. Part of the lesson plan covers class discussion as to why cards from different parts of the world might be similar and different from the cards they made.

Needs & Wants and How They Influence Culture

This lesson plan and interactive web activity is for teaching students how needs are influenced by our environment. Using this web page students will be able to construct a new understanding for how scarcity of water can influence daily life. They will watch a video that requires active participation as it is watched. After the video is finished, the students will answer a questionnaire about their water usage. This data is added to answers from other children all around the world allowing students to see a graph showing how others get their water.
